What is a cowards punch?

18 year old Daniel Christie was attacked on Christmas day 2013 in King Cross and received fatal injuries. He was taken to hospital and the offender was arrested and charged heavily for his crime. Afterwards, Daniel went into a coma and died a short while after. When this occured, many people in society woke up to what was going on so often and the government took action by making the one punch law. Another victim called Bruce Steenson was also a victim of the coward punch. The 53 year old suffered head injuries when being attacked from behind. The offender was charged for murder, but wasn't sentenced to jail. One of the most prominent cases was the Thomas Kelly case. On 7 July 2012 an 18 year old Thomas Kelly minding his own business was coward punched by an intoxicated 19 year old causing severe brain injury. He died 2 days later in hospital. References

So what is a coward's punch? A coward's punch is when a punch is thrown without warning from an angle in which the victim cannot view. The coward's punch is also known as the Sucker punch and the King hit. The coward's punch can be lethal, and the target may get seriously injured or in the worst cases, death.
One Punch Laws This legislation is taken into account in New South Wales, Northern Territory and Western Australia. The consequences for the coward punch is the following: "New sentences for ‘one punch’ assaults a 20 year maximum sentence for anyone. If the offender was affected by alcohol or drugs, the offender will receive a minimum of eight years and a maximum 25 year sentence applies to the offender in New South Wales." Says the NSW Government website. Most coward punches occur around pubs or at night around the street due to people who were intoxicated. This is the main cause to coward punches. The main age group in which coward punches occur are teens 18+ or people in their early and late 20's In Australia. This is a problem since the legal age to drink in Australia is 18. Campaigns There have been various campaigns to stop cowards punches and alcohol fuelled violence in general. The most famous of these is probably the Danny Green advertisement we have all seen on television. The ad shows a young man about to coward's punch another man because he unintentionally spilt his drink. The man is then stopped by Danny Green who gives a short lecture about the coward's punch. There have been other foundations aimed at preventing alcohol fuelled violence such as the previously mentioned Thomas Kelly foundation and the One Punch Can Kill campaign.
